Ditto. I have a 1st gen Oculus but with Facebook buying them and them dropping support for Linux and macOS I'm not interested in their Quest.

The first time I heard Facebook would buy Oculus, I knew it would go to shit. And it did.
Regarding VR in general: In my case, it was a wait-and-see thing. VR developed slowly, and there are now quite a few games I would play in VR. However, right now, the price/entertainment ratio for a VR solution pushed it way down on my priority list.
I'm still looking at prices every now and then, and if I were to buy one right now, I'd buy the HTC Vive Pro 2 (full kit, not just the headset).

Yeah I've been following them since the early stages when John Carmack talked about it at QuakeCon IIRC. The moment Facebook announced the deal, it was enough to kill of any interest. And then Luckey announcing that the price is going to be in the ballpark of original estimate of $300 only to turn out to be over $600 was the final nail in the coffin.
Instead I got a Samsung Odyssey WMR headset. It's not the best in any specific category but works pretty well for me. And it was like $200 so I don't regret buy

I donâ(TM)t get it. The Quest 2 is exactly $300.00, and itâ(TM)s by far the best headset at that value, and competitive at higher price points even.

I have the first Oculus Go. I don't play games and rarely use it. I mainly bought it for Google Earth VR and somehow thought I could read books while lying down on the bed. Obviously, didn't do my reasearch. I bought the wander earth VR app, but had to put it away because it turned out to be such a battery guzzler. Now my headset is an expensive paper weight.

I hardly ever used my Go either. Its usage scenarios were very limited. I wouldn't really compare it to the Quest 2, though. At least not in any other sense than as nascent tech versus mature tech. I get that Facebook puts people off, but if ignoring that then the Quest 2 is a brilliant piece of tech for the price and the first VR device I would recommend to just about anyone with even a remote interest in VR (with the caveat of "if you don't mind Facebook").

I was heavily interested in VR tech research when I was young, However, I formed the opinion that there was much potential for using the tech for evil in ways that could be detrimental to human society, so I chose to get out of VR and keep my inventions to myself.
In recent times, that evil has shown itself in the form of Meta-sta-face.

Is it perfectly photorealistic? No, of course not. Neither are even the best games available on a $2k PC gaming rig. However, 6DOF is incredible, and the ability to get a physical workout is a much needed innovation in gaming. The immersiveness is also every bit as breathtaking as I'd hoped for over the decades. I honestly don't get the haters aside from those who have motion sickness issues, and most of those are resolved with acclimation or will be resolved with better hardware in the future.

I disagree. It's more a case of 80s: This is crap. 90s: This is still crap. 00s: Still crap. 10s: Wait, what, this is it, boys!
It's less a case of incremental improvement and more like the hop from blood letting as medicine to sterilized operating theatres. In that one did nothing it really claimed to do, while the other actually does. VR did not get "better", it went from "hey, if only we had the tech this idea could actually work" to "this actually works now".

It's uncomfortable and sweaty enough as it is, you couldn't pay me enough to strap a pound of heat-generating, screendoor weight to my face all day. My neck hurts at even the idea, and I'm not a skinny man.

You don't need depth perception for VR. Things like head tracking will still work. You'll get the sensation of "being there" through parallax and movement.

Being the proud owner of only a single eyeball precludes me. If you ask why am I proud of it I lost it in the coast guard while saving a life.
VR is not about 3D it is about being somewhere else. IRL stereoscopic vision is crap anyway only works a few meters then binocular vision is worthless. Most of the other depth queues still work in VR even with one eye closed.
Remember the first time I put on an HMD... looked at the image on the screen and even then I still didn't get it. Was like wow these screens look much bigger than I expected them to be.

I only use Skybox for porn and that's literally it. I deleted my FB account so I'm very glad Occulus dropped that requirement. It doesn't seem like there's an alt OS, but if there's a Lineage port or something that can play 3D/side-by-side 180/360 videos, I'd flash it immediately.

I have an original HTC Vive. I found that I couldn't wear the goddamned thing because of my glasses. Even with the lenses pushed out as far as they could go, it wasn't happening.
I can't wear contacts, so my take-away is that VR systems aren't for me.

I've read about the support for many large virtual screens - which would then be at a distance, instead of "in your face". It sounds very enticing, but the software seems to still be very fragile. Plus, the headsets are still big and heavy - it's hard to imagine wearing one for hours on end.

I've used a variety of VR headsets that other people had, but I ended up getting an Oculus Quest 2 because it didn't need any external sensors set up, no PC, and has a number of Star Wars games I enjoy.
II've not used it for a while but I think the system is really well made. I too am annoyed with the Facebook connection, but such is the price of technology these days.

I have a strong dislike for the Facebook requirement as well. But, damn, it's a great device. It's pretty much a childhood dream come true. With the ability to pair it wirelessly to a computer for the extra horsepower that provides, the only real drawback is the Facebook thing.

I totally agree; it works really well even without being paired and as a result is the first VR device I think of as usable.
All of the other ones, even the PSVR (which I also own) require WAY too much setup.

Ordered on day 1. Software stack for it is now several years old and completely firewalled from Facebook. It will never be updated.
Still use it from time to time... VR is a lot of fun. Just wish the HMD ecosystem thing would have died off by now. No reason for HMDs to be tied to facefuck, steam or windows. Hopefully with OpenXR things improve.

and played through Alyx in the early weeks of the pandemic. I had the original Vive before, the Index is a big step up. I've had a few "VR parties" and played stuff like Beat Saber or Fruit Ninja, but that's most fun with a group and I go months not touching the headset otherwise. Having to clear the room of furniture is a bit annoying; even though I designed my home office with VR in mind, stuff creeps in and right now the center of the room is an art studio.

I've had a Valve Index for a couple years now. Haven't found anything better.
It's not something you can really do for more than an hour or two at a time, but there are still scenarios in some games like Half Life Alyx and Boneworks that get my heart rate going. I really think that with a few more die shrinks and improvements to screen technologies they're going to start catching on in a big way.
My main complaint at this point, however, is the lack of support for VR for content creators.

There's no arguing what something is worth to _you_. But, I can't think of any reason for someone to spend £150 on a CV1 when they can get a used Quest 1 for less (unless they're a collector, I suppose; the CV1 should carry more historical significance down the line). The Quest 1 is a much more versatile device, with greatly improved image quality. I have done the large part of the engineering of the Koliseum soccer table. It allow up to 4 players, each with a headset, to play a common soccer football game with real mechanical rods that act like on a regular soccer table. Missing players are replaced by robots. Each rods have a handle with buttons that allow specials features like detaching the player from the rod. The game use the virtual reality to bring effects and surprises impossible to realize in the real world.

I had wanted to get VR for a long time, and a while ago was there a deal on the Oculus Quest 2 that was too good to pass up (price-wise, that is).
I hate the fact that it needs to be connected to facebook to work, but not needing a beast of a PC and being tethered to that via a cable outweighed the fb-issue for me. My son in law had one with his gaming PC, but it was way beyond what I wanted to spend on something like that. It was great fun though.
