I like my CAT phone that's rugged, not totally filled with bloatware and has dual SIMs.
The fact that it also has an IR camera is nice but not essential for what I usually use it for. But it's not bad that the IR camera is there since I have spotted a few problems with it.

I'm particular to the Fairphone series. I only wish they had more modules and rugged options.
My old Blackview BV6000 was very nice too. Especially if you could only afford $180. I dived with it and threw it against stuff. Manufacturer put up a disassembly video himelf. Parts were on e-Bay. That's pretty close to modular. I still managed to ruin it by ripping the battery connector off the main board. ;)

No problems that I have recognized, but whenever I want to take good pictures or make a decent video I'd bring up my DSLR instead.
I always expect the cameras in a phone to be potato quality for various reasons, most often due to dirty lens.

No fingerprint sensor is a massive fail though. Now that masks are mandatory in shops it's a real pain to get face unlock to work. Fingerprint sensors are fast and reliable.

While I agree that Touch ID would be faster and simpler, I wouldn't describe Face ID as "a real pain"

Let's assume "per day" means 16 hours, leaving you 8 hours to sleep. Even that is a bit of a stretch as you're probably not using your phone while eating, etc.
Unlocking your phone 400 times per 16 hours means 25 times per hour, or on average every two minutes and twenty four seconds. You'd be better off leaving your phone unlocked.

A major benefit of Touch or FaceID is that you do not have to enter your passcode in the view of other people or security cameras. Using the passcode is a step backwards, regardless of its (in) convenience.

A major drawback is in the US you can be compelled to provide your fingerprint or "faceprint", but not your passcode.

This is a problem that needs a software fix.
On the one hand you want to start recording your counter with the cops using your phone. On the other you want to make sure it's locked and won't unlock until you enter your very long and secure password if they take it off you.
Phones need an emergency mode that records video (and ideally uploads it to the cloud in real-time to prevent deletion) but also requires the password to end the recording or unlock it for any other purpose. Obviously the USB port should al

I have to use mag strip all the time because the security chip doesn't read properly. Three failed chip reads leads to a complete bypass of the chip and pin system and unlocks traditional mag strip swipe on every reader I've come across.

I can't remember the last time I went to a place that would accept a mag swipe.
If a store accepts a mag stripe transaction instead of a chip read they are liable for fraudulent use (in the US).
In my experience most credit card readers will still accept them as a fall back if the chip reader has three failures consecutively on the same transaction. (had a debit card that cracked causing the chip to miss-align easily)

The funny thing is that they showed a MagSafe Credit Card pouch with an Apple Card (which has a magstripe on it) in it during the iPhone demo. You would think that they wouldn't offer such a product if they thought that was going to be an issue

Are card magnetic stripes still a thing in your part of the world?
My bank cards have rfid chips. My store loyalty cards have barcodes. And in any case, I pretty much exclusively use Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. *Everyone* here accepts Apple and Google Pay.

I gotta admit, the iPhone 12 mini has me interested. But I'll wait until I can get ahold of one and see if I like it.
When my iPhone 5S finally became too unreliable, I went to an iPhone 8 which was bigger and bulkier. Yeah, I got used to it and I liked the bigger screen. But it occurred to me that the screen is about the size of my old iPhone 5S. "Gosh, if they could come up with a phone the size of the iPhone 5S but with a full screen, that would be awesome!"

The new iPhone SE is the same size as the iPhone 6,7,8. When they announced that I pretty much gave up hope that Apple would release another small phone. Then they announced the iPhone 12 mini which is the new small phone. It is a little bigger than the old SE, but smaller than any other phone Apple has sold since the original SE. Sorted by size:

It is too expensive, but most the other brands wasted no time issuing $1K+ devices after the X came out. I got the X thinking it was a one time $1K+ thing, but I in retrospect all I did was help break the $1K ceiling. I’m eyeballing the 12 Pro (not Max, don’t need a phablet) but only because I do AR work and the lidar is a big deal in that respect. I haven’t bought it yet because I don’t care about 5G, faster magnetic charging, or better cameras, I’d literally be spending $1100

As an original iphone SE user - iphone 12 mini is a reasonable replacement, sort of. The screen is larger. The lack of audio jack is something I've just resolved to. No Touch-Id is annoying, but not a dealbreaker.
However, I am not willing to carry on my person a tiny item worth that much money. So, will wait a couple of years, until they come on a second hand market at a more reasonable price. In the meantime, original SE works fine, thank you.

This is my thinking too. If I buy the 128GB version and pay for accidental damage insurance, it's way past sensible purchase.
By "sensible" I mean it'll outlast 2+ android midrangers while providing better user experience (including updates), better photos and higher resale value.

Coincidentally I was visiting my new mobile phone company a couple of days ago, and spent some time discussing the new phones with the woman who sold me my new phone. I got a free Android phone, but it's pretty small so I'm tentatively shopping for a bigger one. The bigger Androids start around $200 and go up to Apple prices. Possibly even higher? No phone is big enough to have the physical lens you'll get with a REAL video camera. In the case of a school project (that can't justify buying such a camera), learning how to shoot with a constant distance can be part of the learning experience. Not sure if that was possible for your kids, however. Depends on the subject.

They almost had me convinced to upgrade with the camera improvements - larger sensor (on the Pro Max), a longer zoom (2.5x), much better low light ability, HDR video...
But, I can't see using much of that ability near-term, as normally I'd make more use of those camera features on trips. So I decided to wait until at least the first part of the next year, to decide if it was worth upgrading...
Two other aspects that makes me want to wait a bit:
1) First gen 5G support (for Apple). Would probably like one iteration of that.
2) No top line increase in storage on Pro Max. Would like about 2X the max they offer, I am bumping into that storage limit already from time to time (some 60FPS 4K video will do that).

I skip and wait about 3/4 generations, I just upgraded to the 11 pro max from a 7...and am sort of regretting it. Its too big and falls out of my pocket when getting in and out of cars, the screen has a small scratch already (my 7 was blemish free and went through several moves). In hindsight the normal pro is good enough...but considering their t7 chip tech has already been hacked ive given thought about just going to a simple flip phone.

I seem to skip generations before going for the next phone. Some iPhone 3 thing, then a 5, then a 10.
The problem right now is more with the software. I can't play movies in the Apple app, some portion of my music is "can't play in this country" (ripped from my CDs dumbass), and the keyboard placement has me making significantly more mistakes in typing than the 5 did. I was looking for a smaller phone, so the Mini would have been a contender, not quite as small as I would have liked, but better than what I eventually settled on in the Samsung S10E.

That is kind've where I am. The iphone 12 mini is very compelling, but I won't buy it at those prices. I'd prefer to buy previous-gen android and run LineageOS, but they don't support any of the smaller android phones (like from Sony). Plus, I don't always have time to setup a new phone with LineageOS promptly when the previous one stops receiving updates, which isn't a good thing. If that is the case again with my current phone, I may very well give in and say that iOS privacy is good enough.

The biggest benefit it really brings to someone like me, who already uses a high spec iPhone XS Max, is the improved camera. Lately, iPhones have really been trying to raise the bar to consider them a capable enough camera so it's not worth your effort to carry around a purpose-built SLR. Great, but they're still not quite a substitute for something like my Canon 70D and multiple lenses. And when I don't care about the photo quality enough to mess with the SLR camera? I'm getting perfectly adequate results

RCS isn't end-to-end encrypted, and the desire to for this to exist probably means that RCS is completely dead short of a legal mandate to use it "instead" of any software-based implementation that bypasses carriers.
With that said, in order for phones to be 5G compliant they have to support it. That doesn't mean that Apple has to default to it. All that means it that the phone keeps track of calls/texts from people and those with iPhones/iPads/Mac's and first tries to contact it that way while only sending
